Can phlox change colour?

last year and the year before the phlox in our garden was bright white. But this year it's much taller and the flowers are purple. Has anyone else noticed this?

Can phlox change colour?
Hard to find any straight answer to that Kerry

Some plants do flower in different colours at different times of the year. Found this info on phlox - it's a great decorative plant

edit - sorry Kerry, took me a while to find some info. No personal knowledge to draw upon. Hoping the star will bring in our mutual friend and keen gardener (Bernie)

Reply:Hybrid Phlox does have a tendency to revert to the species type. Often this will be seen primarily in the self sown seedlings, but it can happen in the mother plant as well. I've never minded it in the seedlings but it is annoying in the plant I thought I bought. I've had it happen in hybrid lilies also. I never have the heart to remove them so I just learn to like them as they are. In my opinion there's no such thing as a bad phlox anyway!
Reply:If it's the annual variety the colours will vary from year to year as they fertilise each other. Originally a wild flower from the Americas I think, and like other flowers introduced to gardens they carry the genes of all the colours that have been developed.
Reply:That can happen at times it may be a change in the soil and I think it happens more if they are the ones that smell nice, you might find that next year they will be a white with bit of pink in the middle. They are nice to cut and take indoors.
Reply:It was me, I painted them all a different colour just to confuse you...I see it worked! lol!
Reply:wow I love purple flowers my favorite...
Reply:well birds carry pollen, and bees do, they could have caused this change of colour

Sure go ahead and transplant now it will be fine.
Reply:I transplanted mine last fall and they are doing great this year.
Reply:Whats a phfloexcxs
Reply:Yeah, what the hell is a "Phlox"? Is it toxic to deers? Wait 'till you see what happens to the deer first.
Reply:fall is the best time to transplant. It is mild enough for the roots to take hold and the spring provides them with what they need to get established before the heat of summer.

Can you mow over phlox? if so, what time of year and will it grow back?

Yes. It will return in early spring.

Can you mow over phlox? if so, what time of year and will it grow back?
you can mow over them any time of the year and they will grow back...if you mow over them now you will see them again at the first of spring
Reply:Phlox need to be cut or mowed in the fall so they would not need to be disturbed in the spring. They surely will come back with more stems than before. If they are more bushy now, it is time to divide and have more than one plant.

Can you use a hydro seeder to plant phlox seed?

A hydro seeder is used to plant a lot of seds at a short period of time like grass. ifyou had several 100 lbs of phox seed you could do it but who would want that many phlox?

Can you use a hydro seeder to plant phlox seed?
They only have little seeds and crowd up if too many in the same place. Aren't they the sweetest little flower?

Try using the hydro seeder, but don't use all your seeds just in case you don't get the result you want this way.
Reply:Don't see why not

How to grow phlox plants?

Good's answer is a little misleading. Phlox cannot grow on a rock wall. I think she is referring to the hanging or creeping characteristics of this plant. If planted on the top of a rock wall, in a few years it will drape or hang down the wall which makes it appear to be growing on the wall.

It is a pretty easy to care for, requiring little care. A little water and a sun and shade combo is best. If you have a larger area you want to cover. Separate the starts and plant them a foot apart. Before too long, they will spread and appear to be a purple blanket covering the area..

phlox grows well in a sandy soil, or rock walls. this is a fact.....not a guess
Reply:Water them once a week. Make sure they have about 4 hours of sunlite a day.

My phlox plant has brown spots on them and the leaves are falling off. What do I need to do?

Everybody's phlox is dropping leaves in October! Phlox are susceptible to various fungus disorders, so when the plant dies back, make sure you rake out all the dead leaves to avoid or lessen the infection next spring. PLEASE, do not over-water or fertilize now. Wait until spring.

My phlox plant has brown spots on them and the leaves are falling off. What do I need to do?
fertilize and water
Reply:Check under the leaves to see if you can find evidence of any insects. I have a watering system where I live and it comes on at night and sometimes my phlox gets too much water. Definitely pull the brown leaves off. I sprinkle Sevin dust on all my plants with problems like that. Won't hurt the plants and kills almost all insects. Probably not the best time to fertilize but you could try some mulch. It's about time for that anyway.
Reply:I would guess it's the time of year. just pick up the dead leaves away from the plant and the spotted ones off the plant. Mulch well and wait for spring.
Reply:Powdery mildew! Phlox is susceptible to it, and unfortunately there is little - really nothing - you can do about it. There are some named varieties that are quite resistant to it. Off the top of my head is one called 'David'. Very nice 4-5 feet tall and pure white. I have lots of it. It reseeds easily and gives some colors - mostly magenta/red violet, and some of these are mildew resistant.

Some suggest good air circulation or spraying with water and baking soda, but in my mind you are fighting a losing battle and will be in the same boat every year. Cut your losses and get some 'David'.

Good luck

I tried to divide my creeping phlox & ended up with one piece without roots. How do I get roots to grow?

Place the piece without roots into a glass jar filled with water. Keep it in a sunny window and roots should begin to develop within a week or two.

too much information LALALALALALALALA
Reply:you need to used a 5ft. shovel, and dig them out in basketball size clumps , then go back and fill the hole , next year they will have filled that back in.

When is the best time to plant carpet phlox?

I think if is OK to split your plants now, then it is OK to plant them, but don't do it when the soil is cold.

I love phlox, i have some pretty ones in my garden , they soften the edges of my paving!

Does anyone no about the plant laura phlox?

trying to find out if they will come back each year in a pot ........or does it need to be planted in the ground?

Does anyone no about the plant laura phlox?
Phlox paniculata "Laura" is best planted in the garden,it is a perennial plant. That's not to say it won't grow in a pot,but it will not come back for you. If you want you can grow it in the pot this summer and then plant it in the ground in the fall.

How easy/hard is growing phlox?

I planted some several years ago and now have a 5ft. by 3ft. patch that is fantastic. I fertilize in spring and early summer and water when needed.

Mine are just striking and draw compliments from the neighbors every spring. Downside is the blooming period is relatively short....but wonderful.

I think they are easy to grow.

How easy/hard is growing phlox?
easy. plant, fertilize occasionally, grow....
Reply:It's an easy %26amp; fast growning plant as well as hardy. Plant startr plants when all danger of frost is past. Good fill in around other flowers.
Reply:but it only blooms in early spring.
Reply:Phlox is very hardy and doesn't require much help. Just plant it in decent soil and keep it watered.
Reply:Water comes in handy too!

Do a web search "Cultivation of ....", this will get you all the information you need for this specific plant.

Does anyone know where I can get a start of or buy lilac phlox?

You can buy phlox at Home Depot. That's where I get many of my plants. They guarantee their plants %26amp; one of their suppliers is Monrovia .

http://www.monrovia.com whose plants are featured in "Horticulture" magazine.

It's so nice that stores that have garden centers offer quality plants at bargain prices. Now, I've found that some box stores (like WalMart) may not handle their plants properly %26amp; bad handling damages the plants enough that they don't have a chance of doing well. I've pointed out %26amp; explained to store managers that placing plastic enclosed tubers %26amp; bulbs under their hot lights were "cooking" the plants. They reacted immediately, but the damage was already done.

It all depends on the individual store %26amp; on the knowledge of the managers in those stores.

My Home Depot has an experienced manager who is knowledgeable about plants. So I enjoy going there for my plant selections.

Good luck! Hope this helps.

Does anyone know where I can get a start of or buy lilac phlox?
Before Home Depot, nurseries would charge very high prices for plants. Now I frequent HD %26amp; can buy plants %26amp; not worry about overspending. I wish there was a Lowe's in our town too :) Thanks for voting! Report It

If you're talking about the tall perennial garden phlox, there's a light-purple cultivar that is called "Laura'. It should be available at a decent-sized nursery in your area; please don't patronize places like Wal-Mart or Home Depot for your plants. Go to a good nursery, where raising and selling good-quality plants are the ONLY business.
Reply:phylox flowers are the first flowers to come out in the early spring at the local nursery. you will have to wait for them to come in to season next spring, then get all youu want.

You can buy some seeds, but they are too slow to grow unless you want to set up a mini garden in the house to get started before spring. If you are not impatient, go for the seeds and enjoy growing if reasonable in your area to plant.
Reply:The tall, fragrant phlox blooming now are Phlox paniculata. For mildew resistant cultivars I like 'David' with sparkling white flowers; 'Robert Poore' has magenta flowers. 'Barten' is syn 'Lilac Flame'. (That is kind of redundant since phlox means flame in latin.) Then there is ‘David’s Lavender’
